Intro
Hello. Thanks for being here. My name is Roman Gioglio and I live in Santa Cruz, CA—land of morning ocean fog, tall trees, and oak prairies.
I appreciate soft expressions of beauty. I find that our ability to make beauty in praise of our world is what makes us uniquely human. By beauty, I think of something more expansive—it could be how we grieve a loved one or the tenderness of our hardest moment or the garden behind our homes swelling with life. I hope to be a part of this making during my time here, and help feed the soul of our world.
This website shows some of my artistic work towards this pursuit, which I hope you find intriguing. I am passionate about books, writing, and images. Bookmaking has offered me a creative capacity to become more intimate with the world around me. As I write poems and make images they become mirrors and windows into deeper understanding and connection to myself and my community.
Day to day I am a social worker and farmer at the Homeless Garden Project and a Father to my young, blossoming daughter.
My Work
Bookmaking
I am passionate about handmade books. The first time I made a book with my two hand it felt like magic and like I had finally turned the key of my life and it unlocked the deadbolt. I do everything from making blank journals to intimate family volumes to special edition art books. My favorite is off-the-wall new project from folks like you who have something really special they want to commemorate and share in book form.
Publishing
I am the Co-Founder and Director of Literature at Black Flower Publishing. We publish literature, photography, and fine arts. It is a labor of love and I am proud of all the work we have had a chance to share.
